A lot of laws have been put into place that includes 180 federal laws and many federal regulations. It looks after the betterment of 10 million employers and 125 million workers. The headquarters of this organization is at the Frances Perkins Building named after Frances Perkin, who was the Secretary of Labourer from 1933 to 1945 and was also the first female member in the America Cabinet.
This organization was first formed under the Department of Interior under the Bureau of Labour Statistics in the year 1884 to collect information about employment and labour. They started collecting data, which was published in 1886 and formed an independent organization as the Department of Labour. As this department lacked executive rank, it co joined with another committee to form the Department of Labour and Commerce in the year 1903 and ten years later it was established as an official Cabinet level department.
The Federal Employee’s Compensation Act signed in the year 1916 provided with medical help and necessities, in case if the labourers ever fell ill in site of the work. The Act established an agency which is responsible for the compensation of the labourers and today that agency is known as the Office of Workers Compensation Programs. In 1933 President Roosevelt chose Frances Perkins, the first lady cabinet member of the America Congress to be the Secretary of the Department of Labour. She has been the longest serving Secretary of the department. President John F. Kennedy, during his regime wanted to consolidate all its departments and so built a new building for all the offices that were spread out. This building was later named in the honour of Frances Perkins during the 1980’s.
President Lyndon Johnson later debated the idea of uniting the Labour and Commerce departments in the Congress as he found a lot of similarities in its goals and workings but the topic was merely debated on and the Congress never really took any action. In 2010 a member of the American Federation of Government Employees proclaimed their unhappiness against the increased flextime that had not been re instated by the Obama government which was issued under the previous government. As according to 2013, Tom Perez is the Secretary of the Department of Labour. He calls this department the window of opportunity to do well.
During the latest studies held by the Centre of Effective Government in 2015 against 15 Federal agencies to find out how well they are working, the Department of Labour earned 63 points out of a possible 100. This shows that the work done by the department is below satisfactory.
There a lot of ways by which the department can better themselves. One of the ways is by increasing the amount of effective doctors and by checking if the workers who had been injured are being treated properly or not. If any worker is having issues with being treated and thinks that they are not getting their rights, then they can approach their respective DOL doctors for example a person is Texas can visit the Texas DOL doctor for help. You must know what your rights are before you file for a complaint because your employer can sue you in return.
Your employer should be insured to medical team or agency where they send all their workers if and when they get injured at the place of work. You must make sure that you are treated properly with all the utilities. Your employer also has to pay a certain part of your salary during this period and cannot force you to work. Your employer cant even fire you during this time as that is against the laws. Make sure that when you leave a job, you get a fixed saved amount back which was actually being cut from your basic pay every month. If you have any problems always contact your local office of the Department of Labours.
